Building India’s premier travel ecosystem with Yatra

October 11, 2018

Travel search engine platform Yatra came into existence in August 2006. Based in Gurugram, this company was started by Dhruv Shingri, Manish Amin, and Sabina Chopra with the sole aim to be “India’s Travel Planner.” The word Yatra, which means “journey,” naturally made it easier for their local audience to relate to the brand.

CEO and co-founder Dhruv Shingri is the steering wheel who drove the brand from three members to a 2400-strong organization. Before getting associated with Yatra, Dhruv was known as the Director of Group Operations and Technology at the Ebookers Group in London. Interestingly, the other co-founder, Manish, is an ardent traveler himself and is accountable for a couple of activities like product development, building mobile technology, and managing data centers.

More than 78% of business travelers use a smartphone during the trip planning process and 67% of people do online research before making any decision relating to travel. Today, the brand is well recognized in the industry, and has a user base of over seven million customers.

True to their goal of being a one-stop shop for travel in India, Yatra has both desktop and mobile applications to make travel plans easily accessible to users. Their wide range of services include hotel bookings, domestic and international air ticketing, holiday packages, bus ticketing, rail ticketing, homestays, and more.

Listed on NASDAQ with the stock symbol NASDAQ:YTRA, Yatra has raised $136.7 million to date. Along the way, they’ve used their significant funds to make strategic acquisitions, with the aim of growing their stake in the market and capturing an ever-growing share of the pie.

Some notable acquisitions include TSI in 2010, MagicRooms in 2011, Buzzintown in 2012, as well as Travelguru that same year. These acquisitions have enabled the brand to directly connect with almost all the hotels in the country, thus ensuring improved inventory at affordable pricing points.

To beef up their corporate travel services vertical, Yatra also acquired India’s largest independent corporate travel service provider, Air Travel Bureau Ltd, in 2017. With this procurement, Yatra is the largest corporate travel services platform in India based on gross bookings. Not long after, Yatra launched a self-booking platform specifically for small and medium enterprises as well.
