Mr. CHUA Kee Lock is Group President & CEO of Vertex Venture Holdings Ltd and President & CEO of Vertex Venture Management Pte. Ltd., providing guidance to Vertex on broader investment strategy. He has significant experience ranging from investment-related roles to various management functions.
Currently, Kee Lock serves on the board of the following listed companies: Logitech International S.A. and Yongmao. Kee Lock also sits on the board of various portfolio companies of Vertex Ventures South Asia, including Reebonz and SDiX.
Prior to Vertex, Kee Lock served as the President and Executive Director of Singapore-listed Biosensors, a developer and manufacturer of medical devices used in interventional cardiology and critical care procedures. Previously from 2003-2006, Kee Lock held the position of Managing Director at a U.S.-headquartered venture capital firm, Walden International, and was responsible for all its investment activities in the South Asia market.
Between 1987 to 1997 and 2001 to 2003, he served in various roles within the NatSteel Group, including as Deputy President of NatSteel Ltd. From 1991 to 1993, he served as a General Manager and Chief Operating Officer of Beaver Computer Corporation.
His other positions include: Vice President of Transpac Capital (a Venture Capital firm), CEO of Intraco Ltd, Independent Director of Pacific Internet Ltd., Independent Director of Digiland International Ltd., Non-Executive Director of Lee Metal Group Ltd., Director of Teledata Singapore Ltd., Director of Gaixa Singapore Pte Ltd., Director of CWT Distribution Ltd., Director of Digital Typhoon Pte Ltd., Director of Internet Technology Group Ltd., Director of Easteel Construction Services Pte Ltd., and Director of Siam Industrial Wire Co Ltd.. He also co-founded MediaRing.com Ltd, a voice-over-internet services which listed in Singapore in 1999, and served as its President and Executive Director. In addition to his professional responsibilities, he is actively involved with charitable organizations, including Beyond Social Services and Mainly I Love Kids (MILK).
Kee Lock graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and from Stanford University with a Masters of Science in Engineering under distinguished scholarship from NatSteel.
Mr. Chua Joo Hock is based in Singapore and heads the investment activities in Singapore, Southeast Asia, India and Taiwan.
Joo Hock joined the former Singapore Technologies Group in 1987 where he was involved in the early phase of Singapore Technologies’ venture capital investments which later became Vertex in 1988. Throughout his career in Vertex, he has been involved in VC investments globally particularly in the US, Singapore, Taiwan, India, China and Israel. He spent several years in the US from 1989 to 1992 and later from 1998 to 2004 where he was responsible for Vertex US investments and operation.
Prior to Singapore Technologies Group, Joo Hock was with the NatSteel Group (a pioneer of the Singapore VC industry) where he was involved in VC investments and corporate project development. He spent a number of years in manufacturing and operation in the Singapore subsidiary of General Electric (USA)’s semiconductor division, and then in Singapore Economic Development Board upon graduation from the University of Singapore in 1979 with a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical). He also has a MBA from National University of Singapore.
Joo Hock currently represents Vertex on the Board of GrabTaxi, Paktor, Patsnap, HappyFresh, Clearbridge Biomedics, FirstCry, Reverse Logistic Co., muvee Technologies, and eG Innovations. He is also a member of the Evaluation Panel for NRF POC Grant Scheme and the Advisory Board/Selection Committee of SMART Innovation Center.
Mr. Ben Mathias is Managing Partner and Head of Vertex India, having joined in 2015. While his key focus is in India, he is part of the Vertex team covering India, Southeast Asia and Taiwan.
Prior to Vertex, Ben was a partner at New Enterprise Associates (NEA) where he launched their India presence and opened their Bangalore office. While at NEA, he led several investments in the Technology and Healthcare sectors including deals such as ValueFirst, Nova IVI, DaVita NephroLife, Reznext, Panacea Medical and FirstCry.
Prior to joining NEA, Ben held senior positions at E2open (NASDAQ: EOPN) and i2 Technologies (acquired by JDA Software). Previously, Ben spent a number of years at PwC Consulting (acquired by IBM) as member of their retail consulting practice. In his early career, he was at Open Environment Corporation and built application development tools for Distributed Computing.
Ben received his Master of Science in Engineering Sciences from Dartmouth College and his Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras.
Ms. Carmen Yuen joined Vertex Ventures Singapore office in 2014. Her focus is in Singapore and Southeast Asia. Carmen has served many years in Singapore’s government-backed venture capital initiatives including EDB Investments and Spring SEEDS Capital where she worked closely with many start-up companies in Singapore.
Prior to joining Vertex, she was with Majuven, a Singapore angel fund. Carmen currently serves on the Board of TickledMedia (dba TheAsianParent.com).
Carmen received her BBA from Simon Fraser University.
Genping joined Vertex in 2010. He covers Southeast Asia on industry sectors including internet/mobile and enabling technologies.
Genping has a diversified set of experience working with startups & multinational companies in various sectors including internet, electronics (batteries), telecom and investment banking. He started his career with a product manager role at Motorola Electronics Singapore.
Genping holds a Bachelor of Computer Engineering from Nanyang Technological University Singapore, and MBA from University of California – Los Angeles.
Mr. Piyush Kharbanda joined Vertex in 2016 and is focusing on opportunities in India.
Prior to Vertex, he spent five years investing across sectors with Multiples, a leading India based mid-market fund, where he was involved in investments through portfolio management and exit. Before that, Piyush worked with Alvarez and Marsal on performance improvement and strategy consulting assignments.
Piyush holds an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, and a Bachelors in Electronics and Communications from the Delhi College of Engineering, Delhi.
Gary joined Vertex in 2017. He focuses primarily on covering Indonesia’s burgeoning startup ecosystem.
Before Vertex, Gary was actively investing in early stage entrepreneurs at another Indonesian fund across various sectors eg e-Commerce, fintech, media and SaaS. Prior to that, Gary spent several years at Citigroup in New York, Singapore and Hong Kong, as well as Boston Consulting Group in Jakarta, covering FMCG and financial services sector.
Gary holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management (Northwestern University), and a Bachelors in Finance as well as International Business from Georgetown University in DC.
Jessica Koh joined Vertex as an Investment Associate in 2018 and is part of the team focusing on opportunities in SEA.
Prior to Vertex, Jessica started her career in venture capital as an investment associate at Silicon Valley-based FoundersX Ventures in 2016, where she performed market research on frontier tech sectors and vetted early-stage startup investments. She later completed a stint with 500 Startups where she focused on venture investment and fundraising.
Jessica graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) from National University of Singapore.
Kunal Phalak joined Vertex in 2018 and is focusing on opportunities in India.
Prior to Vertex, Kunal was with Mckinsey & Company, where he was involved in assisting clients across the globe on portfolio optimization and risk management. Before that he interned with Reliance Jio working on cloud applications and had a brief entrepreneurial stint working on hyperlocal commerce.
Kunal holds both Master and Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. He was head of the student led technology incubator and was a founding member of Tinkerers’ Lab during his sojourn at IIT Bombay.
